What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy aka photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of red and near infrared light to stimulate the body’s cells. I use the Photizo VetCare device, which emits red and near infrared light via LEDs.

The cells in your dog’s body are compromised by injury, disease, or aging. Therapeutic wavelengths of red light can stimulate the mitochondria (essentially the cells’ batteries) and help to speed up the natural healing process, reducing inflammation, stimulating the immune system, and relieving pain.

It is a safe, gentle, non-invasive and as well as being used by professionals can be used at home with ease with the Photizo VetCare device.

There are no known side effects, although there is some evidence that suggests over-use in wound healing may inhibit the healing process by over-stimulating the cells. Following treatment there may be some tiredness due to the release of metabolites and/or tension. It is also possible that there may be a short term pain response as the healing process is activated, but this is not often reported.

It can be used to help relieve pain and discomfort in animals with ongoing conditions, improve wound healing after injury or surgery, and it can be used pro-actively with active/working/sporting dogs to enhance muscle recovery after intense activity and training.
